Night of Surprises!

I attended the birthday party of an 18 year old Hungarian family friend on Tuesday evening. Her name is Réka and I would say that she is the most kind, outgoing and smiley person I know. She has the sweetest disposition and it was wonderful to be able to share this big day with her.
There are a few things that I learned during this evening. Hungarians eat all the time; especially at huge (or even small) social gatherings like these. You begin eating when you arrive and 4 hours later you find yourself still eating and haven't stopped for a break in between. We had appetizers, dinner, toasts, huge pieces of cake (some people had two) and then about 20 minutes later they decided that we needed to have ice cream as well, so they went out and bought some. By the time dinner was over I already was way too full to eat anthing else and then it seemed as though the food just kept coming.
I also discovered that people here younger than me drink alchohol. There isn't a law about how old you have to be to drink it, you do have to be 18 to purchase alchohol, but drinking is no problem. So if you get caught by the police with or drinking alchohol at 16, no "legal" consequences.
It was a wonderful night, but being with my parent's good friends all at once was a bit overwhelming and brought back lots of memories. Then we watched a movie of when Réka's parents visited my family in the US, when I was 5 or 6. It was funny to see my parents at such a young age and in this setting. We all had some great laughs. I even heard myself speak Hungarian on the tape. That was a huge surprise.

Love in Christ,
Emily
